Greatland Resources has acquired its first Caterpillar machine from local dealer WesTrac, with the Cat 6060 hydraulic mining shovel now operational at the Telfer gold-copper mine in the Paterson Province of Western Australia’s East Pilbara region. According to WesTrac, assembly of the 6060 was completed over a three-week period, and it is now set to operate alongside three existing units at the Telfer Gold Mine.
Caterpillar introduced the next generation 6060 hydraulic mining shovel in 2020, replacing the previous 6060B model within its product line. This updated version features enhanced engines, optimized hydraulic systems, reinforced structures and undercarriage, advanced Cat electronics, and a modern operator cab.
The 600-tonne class mining shovel offers a bucket payload of approximately 61 tonnes per pass in both face shovel and backhoe configurations. This allows for efficient pairing as a four-pass load match with the 231-tonne Cat 793 mining truck or a five-pass match with the 291-tonne Cat 794 AC mining truck. The unit is powered by twin Cat 3512E engines engineered for high performance, fuel efficiency, and extended durability.
In Greatland’s December quarter reporting, the company announced an investment of A$61.2 million ($42.7 million) in Telfer growth capital expenditure, allocated across tailings expansion, open-pit pre-stripping, underground development, and fleet renewal initiatives. The Telfer mine produced 86,273 ounces of gold and 3,528 tonnes of copper during this period. Greatland completed the acquisition of 100% ownership of the Telfer mine from Newmont on December 4, 2024.
